Overview
We were instructed by a homeowner to carry out a build over drain survey ahead of a proposed extension within 3 metres of a shared drainage line.
Upon completion of the foundations and slab, a post-build survey was conducted to verify that the construction works had not caused any damage to the shared drainage network.
What we did
We carried out a full inspection of the drainage system in the vicinity of the proposed extension, including the shared line.

Key findings and our recommendations
What we found
Our pre-build drainage survey identified existing fractures and root ingress within the shared line, which were clearly communicated to the homeowner prior to construction.
A post-build survey was subsequently carried out to verify that:
The existing defects had not worsened; and
No additional damage had been caused to the remainder of the shared drainage network during the construction works.
Outcome
The pre-construction survey was submitted to the water authority to allow our client to move ahead with his build, with the post-construction survey allowing him to obtain final sign-off from the water authority.
A relatively straightforward case, but a strong example of how early identification, clear communication, and robust verification can ensure a smooth approval process.
